1649年1月30日，英格兰、苏格兰及爱尔兰国王查理一世被当众斩首，罪名包括叛国罪等。此前，查理一世坚称法庭无权审判国王。法庭反驳说，审判完全合法，“the King of England was not a person, but an office whose every occupant was entrusted with a limited power to govern”。
