None of the countries of the Middle East is homogeneous; they consist of numerous ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic minorities. Yet they have not succeeded in evolving a national identity that reflects their heterogeneity. ….While borrowing the European (though gradually weakening) model of territory-based national identity, the Middle Eastern countries have been unable to build a "nation.
